Commissioning a home design in a newly built neighborhood that is almost fully developed, with an almost identical design styles and color schemes resting on the same part of the color spectrum helped a client who didn’t know much about designing and building a home to know one thing for sure...that they want their home to be different.
All in all, the design briefing was that it had to be a difference maker...it had to be unique. Thing is, almost all properties were of hip roof design, a few gabled, with a color choice of either from a fifty shades of grey or beige color scheme, resulting in a neighborhood that looks dull and boring. Less than ten in a hundred were truly a work of art, and we were determined to be one of them.
We decided on a design that completely paralleled most of the design choices, but not to shun on them but rather to create balance, to facilitate a variety in home designs, for its presence to uplift the neighborhood so that neighboring properties will also help uplift its presence. Its karma, in African spirituality we define it as a spirit of balance...not vengeance.
We chose a mono-pitch roof design that offered a design look of a flat roof at the front to the sides for modernity; the site has a great view of mountain homes, so we dedicated a whole roof terrace on top of the garage to truly enjoy the views; functionally designed as a practical family home, with none of the rooms interfering with one another but rather help facilitating the functionality of each other; and we chose from a color that is an emotionally intense color that demands attention like no other color...Red color shades.
This resulted in a beautiful home that became one of the landmarks in its neighborhood, a lighthouse that lifted spirits in a vast sea of ordinary homes.
A home that is a testament that: “Unique Has No Rival”

The Hirundo Rustica Co.
We are a small property design and developing firm based in Pietermaritzburg - South Africa, founded with a vision we call “The Design of Functionality” advocating for a functionally designed built environment. ::: Our Thesis ::: Architecture isn’t about material; bricks, glass, etc. No. Architecture is an extension of purpose; it’s about the way you want to live. Instead of going on about toilet seats, bath tubs, aluminum windows and so on. Rather talk about the experience you want from the property
